A Christian and a Jew Join Together for Medical Missions Program in Africa

A Christian doctor and a Jewish philanthropist have joined forces to provide medical care to the impoverished people of Burundi, a small country in south-central Africa.

Charisma News reports that Christian doctor Jason Fader has teamed up with Jewish philanthropist Mark Gerson, along with Gerson’s wife, Rabbi Erica Gerson, for this medical missions project.

Burundi has a great need of more doctors. Fader was impressed with this great need when he realized he was the only medical professional within a hundred miles and for two million people.

Dr. Fader works at Kibuye Hope Hospital. Many patients come for miles to receive care. Dr. Fader, who moved his family to the country to serve as a doctor, has many stories of the Burundian people going to great lengths to receive his medical care.

Recently, Dr. Fader was awarded the Gerson L’Chaim Prize for Outstanding Christian Medical Missionary Service. Fader was awarded $500,000 which will go toward training other doctors and providing needed medical supplies to the community where he works.

"One of the things about work here," Dr. Fader said, "is that every day we see the things in Luke 4—the blind see, the lame walk, the Good News is preached to the poor."

“Two different faiths that some think would separate the Gersons and me instead weld us in love and service to Africans—every person an image-bearer of God,” he continued.

Other candidates for the L’Chaim Prize included doctors from rural parts of Zambia, Angola, and Kenya.
