ISIS Claims Responsibility for Terror Attack That Killed Israeli Police Officer

The Islamic State has taken responsibility for an attack that killed an Israeli police officer. This is the first attack the Islamic State has claimed to have carried out in Israel.

"With God's help, we succeeded in carrying out an attack in the heart of Jerusalem, near the Temple Mount," read a statement from ISIS’ Amaq news agency. The group also warned that this attack in Israeli-controlled territory “will not be the last.”

In a different statement, the terrorist group Hamas also took responsibility for the attack. Israeli authorities were hesitant to confirm that ISIS played any part in the attack, but they did not say whether the attack could have been carried out by Hamas.

According to The Christian Post, Police Spokesman Micky Rosenthal said, "Three terrorists coordinated an attack, armed with one Carl Gustav automatic weapon and knives. Shots were first fired outside Zedekiah's Cave, and nearby Border Police officers immediately responded and opened fire, killing two of the terrorists at the scene who were armed. One officer and one civilian were moderately and lightly wounded."

The two separate but simultaneous attacks took place near the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem’s walled Old City. Attackers shot at and tried to stab a group of police officers, while another Palestinian attacker stabbed and killed 23-year-old policewoman Hadas Malka.

Malka was rushed to the hospital following the attack, but she died from her wounds.
