In this next week before a very important election, I want to share with you a few things I believe about America.
First, like all nations, we are made up of fallen people in need of redemption. No politician can redeem us. Only Jesus Christ can do that, and He does it individually, not corporately. America is no more special to God than any other nation and if we think it is, we are bordering on idolatry. Remember what Isaiah said: "All nations are like a drop in the bucket and less than nothing."
But with special blessings come special responsibilities. As Calvin Coolidge noted, we cannot continue to enjoy the blessings of liberty if we neglect and abandon the cause of them.
Surely we must be an affront to God, as ancient Israel was. Think of the dead babies, the promotion of same-sex marriage, the materialism and pleasure on which we focus. Take it all together and ask yourself, "Why should God bless that?"
I don't know how next week's election will turn out, but I do know that if God doesn't send a revival it won't matter in the long run who wins.
I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
