Aiming For Heaven

Now that Christmas is over, we're getting back to the things we really care about: Politics. Even Christians seem preoccupied with who will win next November's election. I wonder what might be different if we took half of the time we devote to politics and devoted it to obeying what Jesus taught and commanded? Just asking.

One of the reasons we are so frustrated in our politics is that we project too much faith in people who can't do what we expect them to do. No politician, no elected official, can make your life better. Only you can do that. Oh, they can take more of our money and regulate our businesses and lives and we can do something about that through the electoral process. But they can't build character and integrity in us. That's the work of God in us.

I sometimes think politics is the ultimate temptation from our great adversary. I think of that great quote attributed to C.S. Lewis: "Aim for heaven and you get earth thrown in. Aim for earth and you get neither." Let's aim for heaven in the coming election.

I'm Cal Thomas in Washington.
