Sunday is Father's Day, as if you didn't know. In America, fathers have become culturally irrelevant. Women now dominate. Women are portrayed favorably in the media, while men and fathers are either ignored or laughed at.
Since the rise of feminism, men and fathers have lost a sense of their role, too. Many divorce and are absent or part-time fathers. Too many get the biology of fatherhood right, but not the intimacy. Those who get the intimacy with their children are too often frustrated when they rebel.
If you are fortunate enough to have a living father and if you have a good or at least tolerable relationship with him, tell him how much you appreciate him and that he matters in your life. That goes a long way for men, especially fathers, who often feel unappreciated and unwanted, except when it comes to money.
And then consider the ultimate Father -- God -- who, along with Jesus, uses that term as a description of himself. Father God! What a beautiful thought.
