The recent revelations about sexual assault in the military have left many Americans disconcerted and angry. Well they should: Rape is evil, predation is wrong, molestation is immoral. For such things to be occurring in an institution as vital and as respected as our Armed Forces is unacceptable. Yet should we be wholly surprised?

I'm grateful for every believer who is willing to take a biblical stand in this debate and defend Scripture by "speaking the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15). At the same time, I fear that we are in danger of allowing this controversy to distract us from the larger issue.

One thing is clear: so-called "traditional values" no longer apply in America. Oh, they do for those who practice them because they still work. But politically and culturally, they are becoming as extinct as a dinosaur.

We sin if we call homosexuality something other than sin. We also sin if we act as if this sin cannot be forgiven. We cannot settle for truth without love nor love without truth. The Gospel settles the issue once and for all. This great moral crisis is a Gospel crisis.
